PhD Dreams and Disability Inclusion: NSSPF Inspires with Scholarship Success!

By Mary-Jane Onuorah (NSSPF National Volunteer Coordinator)

The Nigerian Student Society Presidents’ Forum UK (NSSPF UK) kicked off July with an incredibly inspiring and insightful “Friday Night Check-in Call” on July 4, 2025. On this very night at 8pm UK time, the virtual meeting transformed into a powerful platform for sharing academic triumphs and fostering future aspirations, particularly in the realm of postgraduate studies and inclusive education led by the guest for the night, Shingirayi Kandi (Shingi for short), a remarkable PhD researcher.

A Journey of Perseverance: Shingi’s PhD Story

The session began with the customary warm introductions and a unifying prayer, setting a welcoming tone for the evening. The highlight of the night was a compelling presentation from Shingi.

Shingirayi Kandi is an award-winning Researcher, one of which is a PhD scholarship currently in its final year at Anglia Ruskin University. Shingi’s PhD focuses on outdoor learning for pupils with complex learning disabilities. With a background in teaching and support work, including experience in prison education and caring for children with disabilities, Shingi brings practical expertise to his research. His interests include special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and he’s also involved in community work with Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe.

Shingi captivated the audience by sharing his deeply personal and inspiring journey into postgraduate studies. He openly discussed the various hurdles he encountered and, more importantly, how he successfully navigated them to secure a prestigious PhD scholarship. His  narrative was a testament to resilience, strategic planning, and unwavering dedication.

Unlocking Opportunities: Advice on PhD Applications & Scholarships

Beyond her personal story, Shingi provided invaluable, practical advice for aspiring PhD candidates. His insights covered crucial aspects of the application process, including:

  • Applying for PhD Positions:Tips on identifying suitable programs, crafting compelling research proposals, and perfecting application documents.
  • Securing Scholarships:Strategies for finding and successfully applying for competitive PhD scholarships, a critical component for many international students.
  • Overcoming Challenges:Practical advice on managing the academic rigor, personal sacrifices, and unforeseen obstacles that can arise during postgraduate research.

His guidance was particularly resonant for attendees considering advanced studies, offering a clear roadmap and demystifying a often daunting process.

Fostering Future Growth & Gratitude

The conversation that followed Shingi’s presentation delved deeper into strategies for scholarship applications, with attendees eager to apply her wisdom to their own aspirations. There were also discussions about plans for future NSSPF sessions, indicating a continued commitment to providing relevant and empowering content for their members.

The meeting concluded with heartfelt expressions of appreciation for Shingi’s significant contributions. His  willingness to share his journey and expertise not only inspired individuals but also underscored NSSPF’s dedication to supporting academic excellence and promoting inclusivity within the Nigerian diaspora in the UK.

The July 4th check-in was a powerful reminder that with perseverance, strategic guidance, and a supportive community like NSSPF, even the most ambitious academic dreams, particularly those focused on vital areas like disability inclusion through outdoor learning, are within reach. It was a truly inspiring start to the month for the NSSPF community.
