From Check-in to Take-off: NSSPF UK’s Vision for Young African Leaders
By Mary-Jane Onuorah (NSSPF National Volunteer Coordinator)
A Recap of the NSSPF Friday Night Check-in Call (August 1, 2025)
Every Friday night, the Nigerian Student Society Presidents’ Forum UK (NSSPF UK) convenes a call that is much more than a simple meeting. It’s a space where connections are forged, challenges are shared, and a collective vision for the future is built. The most recent check-in on August 1, 2025, from 8:00 PM to 10:19 PM London time, was a powerful testament to this. What began as a series of personal updates quickly blossomed into a strategic conversation about empowerment, community, and the future of African leadership in the UK.
Building a Foundation of Support
The meeting kicked off with a prayer, setting a tone of gratitude and unity. This was followed by informal introductions and personal updates from attendees, a ritual that reinforces the forum’s foundational role as a close-knit community. The transition into discussing the international student experience in the UK was seamless, as members shared their journeys, their triumphs, and the hurdles they’ve overcome. It was a candid conversation that underscored the importance of a strong support network—a theme that would resonate throughout the evening. The shared stories created a collective blueprint for success, built on empathy and shared experience.
Navigating the UK: A Masterclass in Empowerment
The heart of the discussion focused on the practicalities of navigating life and career transitions in the UK. This wasn’t just a casual chat; it was an exchange of invaluable, hard-won wisdom. Participants highlighted three pillars for success:
- Networking: The power of building meaningful connections beyond academic circles to open doors to career opportunities and mentorship.
- Financial Literacy: The importance of understanding UK financial systems, from banking and credit to budgeting and investment, to achieve stability and build a future.
- Community Support Systems: The critical need for peer-to-peer and community-led networks to provide emotional support, practical advice, and a sense of belonging.
The conversation moved beyond simply identifying these needs to strategizing how NSSPF UK can actively build and provide these resources, ensuring no one is left to navigate their journey alone.
The Future is Now: Young African Leaders Conference
The meeting concluded with an electrifying sense of purpose. The group moved from reflection to action, discussing plans for a major upcoming event: a Young African Leaders Conference. This initiative signals NSSPF UK’s commitment to not just supporting students but actively mentoring and empowering the next generation of leaders. The discussions also revolved around identifying various resources and collaborative efforts to support young people’s initiatives, demonstrating a dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship from within the community.
This August check-in call was a powerful reminder that NSSPF UK is more than a forum—it’s a launchpad. It is where personal stories inform collective action, where shared challenges are met with shared solutions, and where today’s students are being equipped to become tomorrow’s leaders.
