By Mary-Jane Onuorah (NSSPF National Volunteer Coordinator)
The latest NSSPF (Nigerian Student Society Presidents’ Forum UK) Friday Night Check-in Call on June 13, 2025, was a vibrant exploration of the power of connection. From new introductions to deep dives into cultural nuances and practical networking strategies, the session highlighted the vital role relationships play in personal growth and success, especially for those navigating life between continents.
Fresh Faces, Familiar Aspirations: Welcome Anglia Ruskin!
The evening kicked off with a warm welcome to new participants, particularly students from Anglia Ruskin University. As they introduced themselves and shared their diverse courses of study, a sense of shared purpose quickly emerged. This segment, followed by a moment of prayer, set a collaborative and supportive tone for the discussions that followed.
The Art of Smart Communication: Making Global Connections
The core of the conversation revolved around the immense power of “smart communication” and the critical importance of fostering connections between individuals and countries, particularly linking the UK and various African nations. Participants shared compelling personal stories, revealing how seemingly chance conversations had blossomed into unexpected and meaningful friendships. These anecdotes underscored the often-overlooked value of simply engaging with others, demonstrating how casual interactions can lead to profound relationships and opportunities.
Navigating Cultural Nuances in Social Interactions
A significant part of the discussion focused on the fascinating cultural differences between Africa and the UK, particularly concerning social interactions and community engagement. Members candidly discussed how varying social cues and approaches to community life can impact integration and networking. This open dialogue fostered a deeper understanding and empathy, providing insights into adapting while maintaining one’s cultural identity.
Networking for Everyone: Strategies for Every Personality
Recognizing that making connections can be challenging, especially for introverted individuals, the group delved into practical strategies for effective networking. The conversation provided valuable tips and encouragement, emphasizing that building relationships isn’t about being the loudest in the room, but about genuine engagement and finding authentic ways to connect. This focus on inclusivity ensured that insights were relevant to all personality types.
Building Bridges, Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with an eye towards the future, with discussions about upcoming in-person gatherings. These planned events aim to further strengthen the bonds forged online, providing more opportunities for direct interaction and collaboration. The overarching message reiterated throughout the call was the fundamental importance of building and maintaining relationships as a cornerstone for both personal growth and professional success.
The NSSPF continues to serve as a crucial platform for the Nigerian diaspora, fostering environments where individuals can share experiences, learn from one another, and collectively build a stronger, more connected community.
