Beyond Borders: NSSPF Brainstorms Solutions for UK Nigerians, Eyes Major Summit!

By Mary-Jane Onuorah (NSSPF National Volunteer Coordinator) The last day of May saw a crucial gathering of minds at the NSSPF (Nigerian Student Society Presidents’ Forum UK) Monthly Brainstorming session. On May 31, 2025, at 11 AM UK time, a dedicated group including Andrew, Dr. Alwell Maduakolam, Mary-Jane, Debs Adebayo, and several other active members, convened to chart the next steps for the forum, tackling pressing challenges and setting ambitious goals for the future. Charting the Course: Brainstorming for Impact The meeting began with warm greetings and a shared prayer, grounding the session in collective purpose. Andrew welcomed everyone, emphasising the significance of this end-of-month check-in to brainstorm critical next steps for the forum. The discussion quickly shifted to the twin paramount issues facing Nigerian students and recent graduates in the UK: visa requirements and financial independence. Andrew underscored how visa status profoundly influences every decision and strategy within their community, especially with ever-evolving immigration policies. The need to pursue permanent residency or citizenship to mitigate ongoing visa-related challenges was a key point. Empowering Through Collaboration: Business & Talent Initiatives Recognising the hurdles of individual ventures, the conversation moved to strategies for community business collaboration. Andrew passionately advocated for pooling resources and expertise, highlighting that “starting a business alone can be challenging.” He stressed the importance of valuing every financial contribution, no matter how small, acknowledging the sacrifices often made by members to support the collective. Members were encouraged to share updates on their business initiatives and local activities. The meeting also delved into the organisation’s strategy for diversifying visa options and talent acquisition. Andrew revealed that a report on a recent summit had been completed and published, though he stressed the critical need for corrections due to initial errors, particularly regarding Cambridge University’s involvement. This highlighted the forum’s commitment to accurate reporting and attribution, acknowledging the complexities of compressing detailed reports for wider publication. Furthermore, Andrew discussed a Global Talent Project that originated from the previous summit by the African Union Student Summit (AUSS), a project that is currently in its research phase. The aim is to leverage the value of skilled workers and innovative businesses in the context of employment and immigration, addressing staff shortages and challenging misconceptions about immigrants in the job market. Amplifying the Message: NSSPF Communication & Outreach A key area of focus was enhancing NSSPF’s communication strategy. Andrew emphasised the need to clearly explain the forum’s purpose to members to ensure full understanding and engagement. Plans were discussed for upcoming reports and even a potential podcast introduced and to be championed by Mr. Eleazer, the new volunteer in the media team to further clarify the organisation’s goals and activities. The media team was specifically tasked with continuing to publish updates on the NSSPF website and in newspapers, ensuring consistent information sharing. Eyeing the Horizon: The AUSS 2025 Summit Takes Shape A major highlight of the brainstorming session was the meticulous planning for the upcoming Annual, AUSS Summit 2025. Debs Adebayo provided a comprehensive update on the organisation process, outlining the shift to a hybrid format to accommodate international participants, abstracts and presentations particularly from Africa. The planning team was tasked with preparing for this format, while all members were invited to indicate interest in joining various planning groups for the summit. Crucially, feedback was sought on proposed summit dates to ensure they could accommodate African dignitaries, with late September or early October being considered. Members with university connections were also encouraged to explore hosting opportunities for the summit at their respective institutions. The summit promises to be a significant platform, offering researchers and students the invaluable opportunity to present their work and thesis presentations. Andrew elaborated on the collaboration initiative at universities, emphasising the potential for leveraging access to information and tools, networking, gaining feedback, and ultimately transforming ideas into impactful projects or businesses. The meeting concluded with expressions of appreciation for the team’s dedicated efforts and a reminder for all members to stay informed about the ongoing initiatives. The May brainstorming session clearly set a powerful trajectory for NSSPF UK, solidifying its role as a proactive force for empowerment, collaboration, and community building within the Nigerian diaspora. #NSSPFInnovates #UKImmigration #NigerianDiaspora #FinancialIndependence #GlobalTalent #AUSS2025 Stay connected for more updates and exciting developments from NSSPF UK as we continue to empower and unite the Nigerian diaspora! More Than a Leader: The Unstoppable Force of Deborah Olusola

Andrew Oyedola (NSSPF-UK National Coordinator) In a world that is in constant search of leadership that is not only effective but also empathetic and visionary, a few individuals truly stand out. Deborah Olusola is one such individual. A recent MSc Management graduate from the University of Salford, Deborah has already carved a path of impactful change, earning accolades and the respect of her peers and mentors. But to label her simply as a “student leader” would be an understatement. She is a dynamic force, a compassionate advocate, and a professional powerhouse whose journey is an inspiration to many. A Trailblazer at the University of Salford During her time at the University of Salford, Deborah took on the role of President of the Nigerian Students Society (NSS), and her tenure was nothing short of transformative. She didn’t just lead; she listened, she fought, and she delivered. Recognizing the financial pressures faced by her fellow Nigerian students, she spearheaded a crucial initiative. Through persistent collaboration with the Students’ Union, including meetings and presentations with the finance team, she successfully negotiated an increase in school fee payment instalments from seven to nine, and ultimately to eleven. This single act of advocacy provided immense relief and demonstrated her unwavering commitment to the welfare of her constituents. But her vision for a thriving student community didn’t stop there. Deborah understood the importance of a holistic student experience. She forged a strategic partnership with Brisk Travels, a travel and tour organization, to offer students opportunities for networking and cultural enrichment. The successful trips to North Wales and York, complete with cashback incentives for paid members, are a testament to her innovative approach to community building. Furthermore, her collaboration with Connect Institute, a Manchester-based consultancy, brought invaluable resources to students. The events she organized on academic excellence, career progression, and immigration were open to all, fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity. The fact that two students won tablets at one of these events is a small but significant detail that highlights her commitment to creating tangible opportunities for her peers. A National and Continental Impact Deborah’s leadership prowess was quickly recognized beyond her university. She joined the Nigerian Students Society President’s Forum, UK (NSSPF-UK), where she took on the role of Graduate Liaison Officer and acted as the North West Regional Coordinator. As an ever-present and dependable executive, she has worked tirelessly alongside the National Coordinator, Andrew Oyedola, to bring the forum’s vision to life, ensuring that Nigerian students and recent graduates across the UK have access to beneficial programs. Her dedication and hard work culminated in a prestigious honour at the 2024 African Union Students Summit (AUSS), where she was named ‘An Outstanding Student Leader of the Year’. This award is a fitting recognition of her relentless efforts and the tangible impact she has made. And, in a move that surprised no one who has witnessed her capabilities, Deborah has been voted as the AUSS Lead for the 2025 summit. This is a clear indication of the trust and confidence she inspires in those around her. A Professional with a Heart for People Beyond her remarkable leadership in the student community, Deborah’s professional CV paints a picture of a well-rounded and highly competent individual. With over six years of experience in banking operations at Union Bank of Nigeria, she has a proven track record of coordinating teams, managing complex operations, and delivering high performance. Her numerous accolades, including the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Nigeria (CIBN) ‘Banker of the Future’ award in 2020 and a letter of commendation from the CEO of Union Bank, speak volumes about her professional acumen. What makes Deborah truly special is that her skills are not confined to the corporate world. Her recent experience as a Mental Health Support Worker in Manchester reveals a deeply compassionate side. Her ability to care for vulnerable individuals, to monitor, support, and de-escalate crisis situations, showcases her profound empathy and her commitment to the well-being of others. The Complete Package: Leader, Professional, and Visionary Deborah Olusola is a name to remember. She is a leader who doesn’t just identify problems but creates solutions. Unmasking Leadership: Vulnerability, Boundaries, and Burnout at NSSPF Friday Night Check-ins!

By Wonderful Tomilade Aderibigbe 4th June 2025 Did you know that even the strongest leaders can cry? And that admitting mistakes isn’t a weakness, but a superpower? If you’re a student navigating the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, journey of leadership – whether in your studies, a student society, or even just your personal life – then you need to hear about the incredible insights shared at NSSPF’s latest Friday Night Check-in! On May 16, 2025, at 7:54 PM (UK time), our virtual space buzzed with vibrant conversation, anchored by the ‘wonderful’ Wonderful Tomilade Aderibigbe. This wasn’t just another online meeting; it was a candid, compassionate, and incredibly real deep dive into the very heart of what it means to lead effectively while staying authentically human. The evening kicked off with warm introductions, setting the stage for what would become a truly safe and open environment. Then, we plunged into a topic often whispered about but rarely discussed openly: Leadership and Vulnerability. Leading with an Open Heart (and Admitting When You’re Wrong!) Imagine a leader who isn’t afraid to say, “I made a mistake.” That’s the powerful truth that emerged from our discussion. As Debs brilliantly shared, vulnerability means “admitting mistakes, acknowledging issues, and being transparent with the team.” She even gave real-world examples from her banking and current roles, showing how openly admitting errors not only humanizes leaders but also builds incredible trust within a team. It’s about taking responsibility, not hiding behind excuses – a crucial lesson for any aspiring leader! Charity further emphasized this, reminding us that leaders are human, too! The idea that we must always be stoic and unshakeable is a myth. She powerfully articulated that accepting one’s humanity and allowing oneself to express emotions, even cry, is vital. Suppressing emotions can lead to depression and emotional trauma. This sparked a fascinating side discussion with Andrew about leaders crying in front of their children, with Charity sharing her own poignant experience of her father expressing grief. Gloria added that for men, particularly husbands, vulnerability is often deeply appreciated by wives who yearn to understand their partners’ emotional landscapes. The Tightrope Walk: Balancing Leadership & Life Let’s be honest, balancing responsibilities can feel like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle. Our attendees bravely shared their own struggles: * Andrew admitted to the challenge of delegation, often taking back tasks he’d assigned, a relatable struggle for many who feel it’s “easier to do it myself.” * Charity grapples with the immense pressure of living up to others’ high expectations as a leader. * Ogba Chukwuebuka voiced the difficulty of creating a “stop-work routine” and truly switching off from professional demands. The conversation then took a critical turn to the feeling of guilt when asking for help. Debs candidly shared her past experience of overworking without pay, driven by the fear of appearing incompetent. And J.R. Jadesola articulated the frustration of constantly chasing people for assistance. This is where Elizabeth dropped a vital truth: the power of saying “no.” Learning to set boundaries as a leader is paramount, ensuring you don’t neglect your own needs while trying to support everyone else. Battling Burnout: Rest is Not a Weakness, It’s a Weapon! The discussion moved to a topic that resonates deeply with students and aspiring leaders alike: burnout. Henry courageously shared his experience of constant headaches and overwhelming stress – classic signs of being pushed too far. Charity drove home a critical point: we must proactively create time for rest, rather than waiting for our bodies to force a break. She even shared her clever strategy of “disappearing” from her lab for crucial recharges! This led to a brilliant distinction between rest and sleep. As Andrew insightfully shared, drawing on Biblical principles of God’s commanded rest, rest isn’t just about sleeping; it’s about intentional and periodic recuperation and regeneration. It’s a deliberate choice to recharge your physical and mental well-being. Andrew used his trip around Europe late last year as an example, facilitated by Dgitech Travels. Andrew and Charity concluded this part by encouraging exercise because working or trekking is not exercise; they both concluded with the saying that “the day you realise the difference between stress and exercise your body will be grateful”. Your Well-being, Our Priority: Next Steps for Growth! The evening concluded with a powerful emphasis on mental wellness strategies. From regular sleep and healthy eating to physical activity, digital detoxes, and setting boundaries, the NSSPF community is committed to holistic well-being. Wonderful passionately stressed the importance of reaching out for support when struggling, reminding us of available resources, including university services and organizations across the UK. And the best part? The NSSPF team is ready to support you beyond the check-in! * Dreaming of adventure? The session opened with insights into leading with empathy and transparency, as participants shared their perspectives on vulnerability in leadership roles. The conversation explored the multifaceted challenges leaders face in balancing work and personal life, including effective delegation, setting healthy boundaries, and managing expectations. Strategies for maintaining mental wellness through rest, physical activity, and seeking support were central to the discussion, emphasizing that true leadership often requires self-care and an openness to vulnerability. Week 4 (May 23): Bridging Continents – Identity & Opportunities The fourth week provided a poignant platform for participants to share their lived experiences of residing between Nigeria and the UK. Heartfelt reflections emerged on what is dearly missed from Nigeria – be it the vibrant community life or familiar comforts – balanced by a deep appreciation for the opportunities available in the UK. The discussion also bravely confronted the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad, including negative stereotypes and discrimination, reinforcing the collective desire for unity, mutual support, and strategic adaptation in both nations. This session also highlighted plans for an upcoming crucial Home Office event in June. Week 5 (May 30): Policy, Progress, and Future Advocacy Closing out a packed month, the final check-in call turned to more strategic and forward-looking discussions.
