By Mary-Jane Onuorah (NSSPF National Volunteer Coordinator)
As June 2025 begins, the Nigerian Student Society Presidents’ Forum UK (NSSPF UK) kicked off the month with another insightful and heartwarming Friday Night Check-in Call on June 6th. This week’s session was a beautiful blend of spiritual reflection, cultural sharing, and practical guidance, embodying the holistic support NSSPF offers its members.
A Spirited Start to the Evening
The meeting began with a soul-enriching segment of religious and spiritual activities, featuring uplifting singing, collective prayer, and warm birthday wishes. This spiritual grounding set a harmonious tone, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among participants. It was a powerful reminder of the diverse yet deeply connected fabric of the NSSPF community.
Tastes of Home & Tales of Adaptation
Following the spiritual opening, the check-in session delved into the rich tapestry of cultural experiences, with a particular focus on food and religious practices. This segment sparked lively discussions as members shared anecdotes and reflections on how these elements shape their lives in the UK.
Beyond cultural foodways, personal stories of growth and learning took center stage. Participants openly discussed their journeys of adapting to new environments and navigating the nuances of cultural differences in the UK. These candid exchanges highlighted the resilience and adaptability inherent in the Nigerian diaspora, offering valuable insights and solidarity to those on similar paths.
Navigating Pathways: Careers, Immigration & Practical Advice
As the conversation progressed, it naturally shifted towards crucial practical matters affecting students and professionals in the UK. Discussions centered around career development, shedding light on strategies for professional growth in a new landscape.
The ever-present topic of immigration challenges was also addressed, with participants sharing experiences and insights. The meeting provided practical advice for students, covering essential areas such as guidance on securing NHS work sponsorships and exploring various accommodation options. The overarching theme that emerged from this segment was the undeniable importance of strong community support and unwavering resilience in overcoming hurdles.
A Community United
The June 6th NSSPF Friday Night Check-in Call was more than just a meeting; it was a reaffirmation of community. It showcased NSSPF’s commitment to supporting its members not just in their academic and professional pursuits, but also in their personal and spiritual well-being. By blending cultural sharing with practical advice and fostering a spirit of solidarity, NSSPF continues to be a vital anchor for Nigerians navigating life in the UK.
